Kateri Sanchez-Quandelacy, daughter of Georgia Quandelacy, Zuni, and Daniel Sanchez, Acoma, was born on March 16, 1984 in Zuni. She began creating art with bears and turtles until her mentor, auntie Faye Quandelacy(d), taught her to carve maiden figures at age 9. Sanchez-Quandelacy made her debut at the Santa Fe Indian Market at age 21, where she received a blue ribbon for her sculpture. That same year, she also won first place awards at the Gallup Intertribal Ceremonial.
