Andres Lementino: Green Serpentine Frog

Andres Lementino: Green Serpentine Frog

Le-men-tino

This carved frog is shaped from green serpentine, a stone known for its smooth texture and vibrant, earthy hues ranging from mossy green to deep jade. The surface has a natural, polished luster that enhances the stone’s subtle veining and gives the frog an organic, lifelike presence—grounded yet mystical, as if it emerged from a forest spring or hidden canyon pool. Its eyes are inlaid with bright turquoise, two vivid blue gems that stand out against the serpentine’s more subdued greens. The turquoise brings a spark of energy and sacred protection, suggesting alertness and wisdom, and linking the frog to water, sky, and spirit. Adorning its back is a beautifully inlaid Zuni rain cloud, a sacred symbol of nourishment and life-giving rain. The inlay work is delicate and precise, made of spiny oyster, mother of pearl, and turquoise. The spiny oyster offers warm orange and coral-red hues, rich and vibrant. Mother of pearl adds an iridescent glow, shifting with light in soft pinks and silvery whites. The turquoise reappears here, tying the rain cloud to the frog’s eyes and adding balance and continuity to the design. Together, the materials and symbols express deep Zuni meanings of fertility, renewal, water, and harmony with nature. The frog feels like a small, sacred messenger—quietly powerful, spiritually alive, and beautifully grounded in tradition.

Frog (Da:k'yawiyo): Toad (Dakka) Frog (Dakkya) is a sign of water. Water is life. In Zuni Pueblo, frogs often appear on prayer bowls since many of the Zuni prayers and dances ask for water in the form of rain or snow. Cleansing is also a part of Frog’s meaning as well as emotional and physical healing.
