Andres Lementino: Antler, Owl
Andres Lementino: Antler, Owl
Le-men-tino
The owl’s body is compact and solid, with carefully etched feather details that give the piece texture and depth. Its wings are tucked close, and its head is slightly tilted, capturing the still intensity of a bird always alert to its surroundings. Set into its face are two inlaid turquoise eyes, vivid and striking against the pale antler. The turquoise glows with a deep blue-green hue, adding a mystical quality to the owl’s gaze. These eyes seem to hold ancient knowledge, lending the piece a sense of spiritual awareness and quiet power. Symbolizing wisdom, protection, and vision, this antler owl is both a natural treasure and a meaningful work of art—rooted in the forest, yet echoing something sacred and timeless.
Owl (Muhukwi): Owls can see what others cannot and this is a large part of Owl (Muhukwi) medicine. Owl’s ability to do this reminds us of the importance of both worlds: the physical as well as the spiritual, perhaps the known and the unknown. Our willingness and courage to transform the unknown in ourselves into the known is a true source of wisdom. The Zuni Pueblo people call the owl “the Night Grandfather” because he does his work at night. Clairvoyant properties and uncovering deception have always been associated with Owl. Its connection with wisdom comes from Owl’s ability to discern that which cannot be “seen.”
