Le-men-tino

Its form is smooth and rounded, with gentle contours that suggest the frog's poised, quiet energy—both grounded and watchful. Its eyes are inlaid with vivid turquoise, gleaming with a bright, almost mystical intensity. The turquoise adds a brilliant contrast to the darker stone, giving the frog a lifelike alertness and a touch of the sacred, as turquoise often symbolizes protection and healing in Native traditions. On the frog’s back, there is a Zuni rain cloud inlay, a powerful symbol of water, life, and renewal. The rain cloud is crafted with spiny oyster shell, mother of pearl, and more turquoise, creating a shimmering, multicolored mosaic. The spiny oyster lends warm, coral-orange tones; the mother of pearl glows with iridescent whites and soft pinks; and the turquoise repeats, tying the composition together with its spiritual blue presence. The entire piece blends symbolism and natural beauty—a representation of fertility, cleansing, and transformation—rooted in Zuni tradition and reverence for the earth and its elements.

Frog (Da:k'yawiyo): Toad (Dakka) Frog (Dakkya) is a sign of water. Water is life. In Zuni Pueblo, frogs often appear on prayer bowls since many of the Zuni prayers and dances ask for water in the form of rain or snow. Cleansing is also a part of Frog’s meaning as well as emotional and physical healing.
