Andres Lementino: Picasso, Rearing Horse
A rearing horse captures the dynamic power and elegance of the animal in mid-motion, its muscular form smoothly carved to convey both strength and grace. The marble’s natural swirls of grey, brown, and subtle black streaks flow across the horse’s body, enhancing the sense of movement and texture. Set into the face are vivid turquoise eyes, their bright blue hue adding life and intensity to the expression. On the horse’s side, an intricately inlaid Zuni sunface combines turquoise, coral, mother-of-pearl, and jet, creating a vibrant and symbolic focal point that contrasts beautifully with the earthy marble. The combination of the rearing pose, natural stone patterns, bright turquoise eyes, and multicolored inlay makes this carving a striking blend of dynamic energy, artistic detail, and cultural richness.
Horse (Du:shi): Horse brought power to the People. After the horse arrived on the Plains, people were able to move faster with heavier burdens, they could hunt game more efficiently, and they became fiercer warriors. Horse affords mobility that gives us freedom and power, but not the power that weighs us down. We need to be mindful that the most positive relationships are cooperative ones. All participants must respect the power of others with acceptance and tolerance. Our relationship to Horse differs from relationships between man and any other animal because it is a relationship requiring a deep understanding, without which the strength and benefits of Horse are inaccessible.
