Andres Lementino: White Marble Bison

Andres Lementino: White Marble Bison

Le-men-tino

The bison is broad and powerful—symbolizing endurance, abundance, and deep spiritual connection to the land. Its eyes are inlaid with turquoise, the vivid blue standing in striking contrast to the muted stone. These turquoise eyes imbue the bison with watchfulness and a sacred presence, reinforcing its role as a protector and symbol of life in many Indigenous cultures. Set on the bison’s shoulder is a finely crafted Zuni Sunface inlay, representing the sun’s life-giving energy, harmony, and balance. The Sunface is composed of four traditional stones:

  • Coral, with its bold red-orange hue, adds warmth and vitality.

  • Turquoise, cool and luminous, signifies protection and connection to sky and water.

  • Mother of pearl lends an ethereal, iridescent glow—symbolizing purity and reflection.

  • Spiny oyster contributes rich orange and pink tones, enhancing the piece with earthy beauty and traditional significance.

This combination of materials and symbolism turns the carving into more than a depiction—it becomes spiritual, a visual prayer for strength, renewal, and balance with nature. Rooted in Zuni tradition and crafted with reverence, this bison is a powerful representation of resilience, sacred cycles, and harmony between earth and sky.

Bison (Si:wolo) is especially important to the Plains Indians. These magnificent animals were the basis of their lifeway before they were hunted to extinction by the white man. While not a traditional fetish subject for the Zunis, all animals have meaning and Bison reminds us of abundance and prayer.
