Benina Kallestewa: Kirtland Stone, Frog
Benina Kallestewa: Kirtland Stone, Frog
Kall-es-tewa
The frog is depicted in a classic crouching posture, limbs tucked beneath its compact, rounded body, ready to spring or simply bask in stillness. Its back is slightly arched, and the carving captures the subtle bulge of muscle and the curved contours of its smooth, damp form. The stone’s natural patterns follow the lines of the frog’s body, almost like the dappling of real amphibian skin.
Frog (Da:k'yawiyo): Toad (Dakka) Frog (Dakkya) is a sign of water. Water is life. In Zuni Pueblo, frogs often appear on prayer bowls since many of the Zuni prayers and dances ask for water in the form of rain or snow. Cleansing is also a part of Frog’s meaning as well as emotional and physical healing.
