Brandon Phillips: Alabaster, Beaver

Brandon Phillips: Alabaster, Beaver

Phillips

The beaver’s face is expressive yet simple, eyes hinted at with gentle indentations or slight inlays, suggesting focus and calm purpose. The alabaster’s natural translucence adds life to the form, catching and diffusing light in a way that gives the impression of quiet motion, as if the beaver might shift its weight at any moment. Its most striking feature is the tail—broad, flat, and beautifully inlaid with turquoise, pipestone, and jet. The turquoise shines with vibrant blue hues, symbolizing water, sky, and life. The pipestone, deep red and smooth, adds warmth and grounding, while the jet, deep black and matte, anchors the composition with quiet strength. Together, these inlays form a mosaic of sacred materials, representing balance—between work and rest, earth and water, effort and flow.

Beavers (Biha) are extremely energetic and exhibit great diligence in whatever they do. Their willingness to participate in purposeful and cooperative activity is part of their medicine. We can learn a great deal from this singular quality. Whether building their underwater lodges, repairing dams, or taking care of their kits, beavers do it with zeal. This is why we have the expression, “eager beaver.” They are gentle creatures who show us that working hard can be its own reward.
