Brian Yatsattie: Pyrite, Standing Bear

Brian Yatsattie: Pyrite, Standing Bear

Ya-saa-tee

The pyrite, often called "fool’s gold," gives the bear a shimmering, golden-bronze appearance, with a surface that reflects light in flecks and facets. The stone's crystalline structure might lend a slightly textured feel, like the bear’s fur has been abstracted into angular planes—suggesting raw power rather than fine detail. The stance is powerful and assertive—a symbol of protection, courage, and primal authority. There’s a sense of movement held in tension, as if the bear could roar or charge at any moment. The black eyes, are set deeply into the metallic face. Their high contrast against the gold-toned body draws the viewer in—glassy, deep, and enigmatic. They soften the bear just slightly, giving it an expression that could shift between watchfulness and wisdom.

Bear (Anshe): Bear was the principal animal for the Pueblo People and they are the most prevalent subject of Zuni fetishes. Bear fetishes are used for healing, protection, strength, journeying, mothering, hunting and gathering. Bear‚ hibernation reminds us of the value of going within.
