Christopher Peina: Antler, Three Hummingbirds On Flower Base

Christopher Peina: Antler, Three Hummingbirds On Flower Base

Pay-na

The hummingbirds are arranged in varying positions to evoke motion and harmony—one in mid-hover with wings arched back, another angled as if feeding, and the third perhaps just lifting into the air. Their bodies are finely detailed yet still retain the natural smoothness of the antler, capturing the lightness and energy of these tiny creatures without overwhelming the material’s natural texture. Each hummingbird features small, inlaid black eyes. These eyes give the birds a lifelike spark—bright, alert, and full of vitality. The subtle shine of the black contrasts beautifully with the pale antler, bringing each tiny face to life. The base of the carving is integrated into the natural shape of the antler and features carved flowers, their petals softly etched and slightly raised. These blossoms anchor the composition and provide context—suggesting the hummingbirds are feeding or fluttering around a flowering plant in full bloom. The flowers are not only decorative but symbolic of life, beauty, and the interdependence of all living things.

Their jewel-like colors and rapid movements startle us, focusing our attention on this unique moment and the precious wonder of now. Hummingbirds migrate incredible distances and must consume great quantities of nectar to support their long journey. Darting from flower to flower, hummingbird tastes the sweet essence and nectar of life. When we experience joy we are more receptive to love. Hummingbird medicine opens our hearts.
