Claudia Peina: Amber, Standing Bear

Claudia Peina: Amber, Standing Bear

Pay-nah

The amber's natural translucence catches the light, creating depths of honeyed tones—ranging from deep butterscotch to pale, sun-kissed gold. Swirls, flecks, or tiny inclusions in the resin give the bear a sense of ancient preservation, as if it holds echoes of forests long past. The bear stands upright, in a guardian pose—broad chest forward, rounded limbs strong and grounded. Its posture is powerful yet calm, evoking both protection and wisdom. Set into the bear’s face are turquoise eyes, bright and expressive. Their cool, vivid blue contrasts sharply with the amber, creating a mesmerizing focal point that adds spirit and personality to the figure. Around the bear’s neck rests a necklace of inlaid turquoise dots—small, evenly spaced accents that encircle the throat. The dots are precisely embedded, their color evoking water, sky, or sacred stone, symbolically balancing the earthy amber.

Bear (Anshe): Bear was the principal animal for the Pueblo People and they are the most prevalent subject of Zuni fetishes. Bear fetishes are used for healing, protection, strength, journeying, mothering, hunting and gathering. Bear‚ hibernation reminds us of the value of going within.
