Claudia Peina: Antler, Standing Bear
Claudia Peina: Antler, Standing Bear
Pay-nah
The bear stands tall on its hind legs in a protective stance. Its form is solid and powerful, with rounded limbs and a sturdy torso, carved with care to suggest the weight and presence of a real bear. The surface is polished to a soft sheen, but not overly refined—preserving a sense of primal authenticity. Set into the bear's face are turquoise eyes, vibrant and piercing. Their blue color shines against the pale antler, imbuing the bear with a lifelike presence and spiritual energy. The eyes seem to watch with awareness, as if the bear is more than just a carving—it is a guardian, protection, a guide. Around its neck is a necklace of inlaid turquoise dots, each one carefully embedded into the antler’s surface in a symmetrical pattern. The turquoise dots provide a striking contrast to the bone-colored base, symbolizing water, sky, and healing.
Bear (Anshe): Bear was the principal animal for the Pueblo People and they are the most prevalent subject of Zuni fetishes. Bear fetishes are used for healing, protection, strength, journeying, mothering, hunting and gathering. Bear‚ hibernation reminds us of the value of going within.
