David Chavez: Compressed Spiny Oyster Shell, Butterfly
Cha-vez
Its surface alive with rich, warm hues—deep oranges, and blues, sunlit corals, and touches of lavender marbled together in natural striations. The shell’s luster gives the piece a subtle iridescence, enhancing the organic beauty of the carving. Scattered across the wings are inlaid turquoise dots, vivid and sky-blue, creating a striking contrast against the warm-toned shell. These dots are not only decorative but add a rhythmic, almost tribal symmetry to the wings. At the center of the butterfly’s head, two inlaid turquoise eyes gleam with vibrant intensity, giving the piece a sense of life and watchfulness. The eyes and wing inlays suggest a spiritual or symbolic meaning—possibly a representation of transformation, protection, or the unity of sky and earth, as symbolized by turquoise and shell.
Butterfly (Bula'kya)
In its short life butterfly (Bula'kya) transforms from a tiny egg to a crawling caterpillar, then becomes an outwardly still cocoon until a winged creature emerges. Butterfly medicine shows us the significance of each stage of transformation.
Butterfly dances on flowers, tastes nectar and flowers through its feet, sees the hidden spectrum of ultraviolet, and gracefully flies on invisible atmospheric currents, displaying balance and poise. Although butterfly looks delicate some varieties tenaciously migrate incredible distances of up to 3,000 miles.
Butterfly's element is the air, symbolic of mental realms. Our minds can go in any direction and our thoughts can take any form. Butterfly navigates this positive transformation with ease and brings powerful beauty to the world.
