David Chavez: Picasso Marble, Bear

David Chavez: Picasso Marble, Bear

Cha-vez

The marble’s natural bands and swirls in warm beige, sandy tan, and soft light brown flow across its body like the subtle texture of fur, adding depth and character to the piece. Set into its face are vivid turquoise eyes, their bright blue hue creating a striking contrast against the warm, earthy tones of the stone, giving the bear a lively and spirited expression. The harmony between the marble’s gentle coloration and the brilliance of the turquoise makes the carving feel both grounded in nature and infused with quiet vitality.

Bear (Anshe): Bear was the principal animal for the Pueblo People and they are the most prevalent subject of Zuni fetishes. Bear fetishes are used for healing, protection, strength, journeying, mothering, hunting and gathering. Bear‚ hibernation reminds us of the value of going within.
