David Chavez: Pipestone, Bear With Gift
David Chavez: Pipestone, Bear With Gift
Cha-vez
The bear’s form is compact and solid, carved with smooth lines and rounded contours that emphasize its strength and stability. Its posture is purposeful—low to the ground, broad-shouldered, and forward-facing—capturing the essence of the bear as a guardian, healer, and symbol of inner strength. Set into its face are turquoise eyes, bright and piercing against the dark red stone. The eyes bring the bear to life, giving it a calm, spiritual awareness. The turquoise—a stone of protection, healing, and sky energy—adds both contrast and deep symbolic meaning to the carving. Resting on the bear’s back is a carefully placed obsidian arrowhead, sharp, glossy, and dark as night. The obsidian, formed from volcanic glass, symbolizes protection, clarity, and spiritual cutting away of negativity. Its dark sheen contrasts dramatically with the matte red pipestone and the vibrant turquoise eyes, creating a visual and energetic balance between earth, fire, and sky elements.
Bear (Anshe): Bear was the principal animal for the Pueblo People and they are the most prevalent subject of Zuni fetishes. Bear fetishes are used for healing, protection, strength, journeying, mothering, hunting and gathering. Bear‚ hibernation reminds us of the value of going within.
