Debra Gasper: Hickoryite, Turtle

Debra Gasper: Hickoryite, Turtle

Gas-per

The turtle is carved in a classic, low-sitting pose with its rounded shell gently domed, each segment subtly defined. Its head peeks forward in a calm, steady manner, and its legs are slightly extended, giving a sense of quiet motion—as if it’s in no rush, simply moving along its timeless path. The eyes are inlaid with turquoise, their vivid blue-green glow contrasting beautifully with the soft tones of the hickorite. These turquoise eyes give the turtle a sense of life and watchfulness—clear, soulful, and wise. Scattered across its shell and limbs are small inlaid turquoise dots, arranged in a harmonious, symbolic pattern.

Turtle (Edo:wa): Turtle has always been esteemed because it carries its home on its back and goes with the flow of the river, not against it. In some mythologies, the first North Americans envisioned the continent as a turtle because it was surrounded by water. Turtle reminds us to respect Mother Earth.
