Delvin Leekya: Picasso, Buffalo

Delvin Leekya: Picasso, Buffalo

Lee-kya

The form is powerful and grounded, with broad shoulders, a heavy chest, and a proud, slightly bowed head that reflects humility, perseverance, and quiet might. It feels not just like a carving of an animal, but like a spirit being—a guardian of the land, carved from the land itself. Set into its face are turquoise eyes, vivid and alive, symbolizing clarity, protection, and spiritual insight. Against the dark tones of the marble, these eyes glow like sacred embers—reminding the viewer of the buffalo’s deep connection to sky, water, and the divine. Resting upon the buffalo’s strong back is a mother of pearl and turquoise arrowhead. The mother of pearl, shimmering with soft iridescence, evokes moonlight, intuition, and spiritual depth, while the turquoise adds a vibrant connection to healing and the sacred. The coral, with its vivid crimson hue, stands in bold contrast to the monochromatic stone. It represents life-force, vitality, and protection—as well as the sacred blood of the Earth. The red coral grounds the buffalo in movement and ceremony, as though every step it takes is blessed and intentional.

Bison (Si:wolo) is especially important to the Plains Indians. These magnificent animals were the basis of their lifeway before they were hunted to extinction by the white man. While not a traditional fetish subject for the Zunis, all animals have meaning and Bison reminds us of abundance and prayer.
