Derrick Kaamasee: Serpentine, Frog

Derrick Kaamasee: Serpentine, Frog

Kaa-ma-see

Derrick Kaamasee's carved frog out of fish rock with inlaid lapis dots and coral eyes. Fish rock is a rare and unique material that is found only in a few places around the world, making it highly sought after by collectors. The intricate detailing on the frog, especially those inlaid lapis dots, adds a touch of elegance to this already mesmerizing creation. And those vibrant coral eyes bring life and personality to the carving that seems almost too real. It takes true skill and craftsmanship to transform a dull stone into something extraordinary like this sculpture.

Frog (Da:k'yawiyo): Toad (Dakka) Frog (Dakkya) is a sign of water. Water is life. In Zuni Pueblo, frogs often appear on prayer bowls since many of the Zuni prayers and dances ask for water in the form of rain or snow. Cleansing is also a part of Frog’s meaning as well as emotional and physical healing.  .
