Douglas Martza: Brown Marble, Bear
Mart-za
The bear, carved from brown marble, stands with a quiet, grounded strength—its form solid and compact, yet full of life. Its eyes, inlaid with vibrant turquoise, gleam with an otherworldly calm—watchful, ancient, and wise. They bring a touch of spirit to the otherwise earthen form, suggesting the bear is more than mere animal: it is a guardian, a symbol, a presence beyond the physical. Resting on its back is a single arrowhead, small but sharply defined.
Bear (Anshe): Bear was the principal animal for the Pueblo People and they are the most prevalent subject of Zuni fetishes. Bear fetishes are used for healing, protection, strength, journeying, mothering, hunting and gathering. Bear‚ hibernation reminds us of the value of going within.
