Douglas Martza: Brown Marble, Mt. Lion

The marble is rich and shadowy, with deep browns and subtle veins of black and rust, evoking the rugged, hidden terrain of canyon walls and high desert cliffs where the mountain lion rules unseen. Its eyes are inlaid with turquoise—bright, striking, and full of alert awareness. The turquoise gleams against the dark stone like flashes of sky glimpsed through trees, lending the figure a spirit presence, watchful and wise. These eyes don’t just look—they know, suggesting the mountain lion’s role as both guardian and hunter, silent observer and fierce protector. Resting on its back is a single arrowhead, sharply defined and purposefully placed. It is more than a symbol—it’s a mark of spiritual significance. The arrowhead may represent life, strength, direction, or a connection to the sacred hunt, binding the physical power of the mountain lion to a deeper, ancestral path. Together, stone, turquoise, and symbol merge into a powerful totem: the mountain lion not only as a creature of stealth and skill, but as an embodiment of independence, intuition, and the quiet authority of those who walk alone, yet always in balance with the land.
