Douglas Martza: Brown Marble, Owl
Martz-a
Its form is compact and symmetrical, with wings folded close to its sides and talons subtly tucked beneath. The surface of the marble is smooth but marked with natural variations—deep browns, faint blacks, and earthy undertones—that give the carving depth and the sense of being hewn from the heart of ancient stone. Its eyes are vivid turquoise inlays, round and piercing. They shine brightly against the dark stone, immediately drawing the gaze. The turquoise lends the owl a spiritual quality, imbuing it with the essence of vision and clarity—eyes that see through shadow, through night, through illusion. Though still, the owl feels watchful, alive with silent intelligence. It holds the aura of a sentinel, a wise observer of the world, grounded in earth but attuned to the unseen. This is no mere bird—it is a symbol of insight, mystery, and the sacred quiet between knowing and not knowing.
Owl (Muhukwi): Owls can see what others cannot and this is a large part of Owl (Muhukwi) medicine. Owl’s ability to do this reminds us of the importance of both worlds: the physical as well as the spiritual, perhaps the known and the unknown. Our willingness and courage to transform the unknown in ourselves into the known is a true source of wisdom. The Zuni Pueblo people call the owl “the Night Grandfather” because he does his work at night. Clairvoyant properties and uncovering deception have always been associated with Owl. Its connection with wisdom comes from Owl’s ability to discern that which cannot be “seen.”
