Douglas Martza: Jasper, Spirit Bear

Douglas Martza: Jasper, Spirit Bear

Mart-za

A bear carved from rich brown jasper stands with a solid, powerful stance, its smooth, polished surface revealing warm earthy tones and subtle variations in the stone’s natural pattern. Bright turquoise eyes are set into its face, their vivid color bringing a lively and watchful spirit to the carving. Resting across the bear’s back is an arrowhead crafted from shimmering shell. The blend of grounded jasper, vibrant turquoise, and luminous abalone creates a striking balance of earth and water elements, giving the bear a presence that feels both strong and spiritually protective.

Bear (Anshe): Bear was the principal animal for the Pueblo People and they are the most prevalent subject of Zuni fetishes. Bear fetishes are used for healing, protection, strength, journeying, mothering, hunting and gathering. Bear‚ hibernation reminds us of the value of going within.
