Douglas Martza: Picasso Marble, Standing Bear
Douglas Martza: Picasso Marble, Standing Bear
Mart-za
The bear, standing tall and poised, is carved from light brown Picasso marble—a stone alive with soft swirls of cream, tan, and warm sienna. The flowing veins of the marble seem to move with the bear, as if the very essence of the land has risen up and taken form. Its body is solid and upright, a symbol of strength and alert presence, yet its smooth contours lend it a quiet grace. Set into the bear’s face are turquoise eyes—small, round, and luminous. They stand out brilliantly against the warm marble tones, imbuing the figure with a sense of spirit and watchfulness. These eyes seem to see beyond the visible world, connecting the bear to something deeper—ancestral, protective, wise. On its back rests an arrowhead, carefully placed, symbolic rather than functional. It marks the bear as more than just a creature—it is a guardian, a traveler, or a spiritual guide. The arrowhead could represent life, protection, direction, or offering—a tribute to the bear’s enduring power and sacred role in the natural and spiritual realms. This standing bear, with its upward stance, turquoise gaze, and arrowhead marking, is a carving of balance—grounded in earth, touched by sky, and carrying the quiet power of survival, courage, and deep knowing.
Bear: (Anshe) was the principal name for the pueblo people and they are the most prevalent subject of Zuni fetishes. Bear fetishes are used for healing, protection, strength, journeying, mothering, hunting and gathering. Bears hibernation reminds us of the value of going within.
