In its front paws, the beaver holds a small fish carved from turquoise, a brilliant blue accent that immediately draws the eye. The beaver’s eyes, nose, and the fish are carved inlaid with turquoise, providing a vibrant contrast to the cool gray stone. The turquoise eyes sparkle with curiosity and vitality, while the nose, a small polished oval, adds a ceremonial and expressive touch.
Most striking of all are the teeth—carved from mother of pearl. They gleam with a soft, iridescent luster, standing out with both humor and beauty. The mother of pearl adds a sacred, luminous quality to this otherwise earthy figure, suggesting not just industriousness, but a sense of spiritual refinement and resilience.
Beavers (Biha) are extremely energetic and exhibit great diligence in whatever they do. Their willingness to participate in purposeful and cooperative activity is part of their medicine. We can learn a great deal from this singular quality. Whether building their underwater lodges, repairing dams, or taking care of their kits, beavers do it with zeal. This is why we have the expression, “eager beaver.” They are gentle creatures who show us that working hard can be its own reward.
