Evander Shelendewa: Cottonwood, Eagle, Woodpecker & Bunny on a stump

Evander Shelendewa: Cottonwood, Eagle, Woodpecker & Bunny on a stump

She-len-dewa

This playful cartoon-style woodland trio is expertly carved from cottonwood, featuring a lively eagle, rabbit, and woodpecker interacting with a central tree stump. Each animal is hand carved with exaggerated, rounded features, giving the piece a whimsical and animated charm.

The eagle perches majestically atop the stump, hand-painted with a white head, a sparkling gold beak and claws, and bright black-and-white eyes that capture alertness and personality. The rabbit appears halfway popping out of the stump, painted crisp white with a soft pink nose and expressive black-and-white eyes, giving it a curious and playful expression. The woodpecker is mid-peck, painted black and white with a brown crown, its black-and-white eyesadding character as it energetically taps at the stump.

Together, the trio creates a dynamic, narrative scene full of life and humor. The combination of cottonwood’s natural texture, hand-painted details, and cartoonish styling makes this carving a charming and imaginative piece — a delightful celebration of woodland creatures in motion.

Eagle (K'yak'yali): meaning is that of extraordinary vision, of seeing the whole picture. Even though Eagle can see the smallest of details from a great distance, it maintains a comprehensive view. Eagle helps us to remember that one’s journey is spiritual as well as physical.

Rabbit (Okshik’o): is a prey animal. Small and defenseless, it depends on its reflexes and keen senses for survival. Rabbit reminds us to acknowledge our fears, for if we don't, they can paralyze and dictate our behavior.
