Farlan & Paulette Quam: Tigilite, Bear with Bundle
Quam
A bear carved from tigilite stands with a grounded, powerful presence, its smooth form highlighting the stone’s natural swirls of warm beige, soft cream, and subtle grey tones. The gentle banding of the tigilite adds depth and texture, enhancing the contours of the bear’s rounded body and giving a sense of natural movement. Set into the face are bright turquoise eyes, their vivid blue color contrasting beautifully with the earthy tones of the stone and lending the bear a lively, watchful expression. Resting across its back is a finely crafted bundle inlaid with turquoise and coral, the vibrant blue-green and warm red-orange tones standing out against the tigilite and adding a symbolic touch of protection or spirituality. The combination of natural stone, striking turquoise eyes, and colorful inlaid bundle creates a piece that is both visually dynamic and rich with meaning.
Bear (Anshe): Bear was the principal animal for the Pueblo People and they are the most prevalent subject of Zuni fetishes. Bear fetishes are used for healing, protection, strength, journeying, mothering, hunting and gathering. Bear‚ hibernation reminds us of the value of going within.
