Fred Bowannie: Zuni Stone, Bear with Squirrel
Fred Bowannie: Zuni Stone, Bear with Squirrel
Bow-won-knee
A sitting bear carved from Zuni travertine, its rounded form radiating a calm, grounded presence. The bear’s honey-brown eyes lend warmth and gentle expressiveness, inviting the viewer into its serene gaze. Cradled tenderly on its arm is a squirrel carved from sugar daddy stone, the lighter, creamy tones of the squirrel contrasting subtly yet harmoniously with the warm travertine of the bear. The composition captures a quiet moment of connection between the two creatures, emphasizing both the bear’s protective nature and the playful innocence of the squirrel.
Bear (Anshe): Bear was the principal animal for the Pueblo People and they are the most prevalent subject of Zuni fetishes. Bear fetishes are used for healing, protection, strength, journeying, mothering, hunting and gathering. Bears hibernation reminds us of the value of going within.
