Hayes Leekya: Egyptian Marble, Bear

Hayes Leekya: Egyptian Marble, Bear

Lee-kyah

The stone’s patterning weaves across its body in striking contrasts—deep black, crisp white, and soft grey—creating a marbled texture that feels both bold and natural. Set into its face are bright turquoise eyes, their vivid blue hue bringing a spark of life and spirit to the carving. Resting across its back is a finely shaped arrowhead of turquoise and coral, the brilliant blue and rich red tones standing out vividly against the monochrome stone. The combination of the marble’s dramatic veining, the lively turquoise eyes, and the colorful symbolic arrowhead gives the piece a sense of strength, tradition, and timeless beauty.

Bear (Anshe): Bear was the principal animal for the Pueblo People and they are the most prevalent subject of Zuni fetishes. Bear fetishes are used for healing, protection, strength, journeying, mothering, hunting and gathering. Bear‚ hibernation reminds us of the value of going within.
