Herbert Halate: Redwood, Bear
Ha-la-tee
The wood’s natural luster catches the light, emphasizing the bear’s broad shoulders and rounded haunches. Set into its face are striking turquoise eyes—cool and vibrant against the warmth of the wood—giving the animal an alert, watchful expression. Resting along its back is a small turquoise arrowhead, the stone’s blue-green tones veined with hints of brown, symbolizing strength, protection, and connection to tradition. The overall piece feels both earthy and sacred, a harmony of natural materials and symbolic meaning.
Bear (Anshe): Bear was the principal animal for the Pueblo People and they are the most prevalent subject of Zuni fetishes. Bear fetishes are used for healing, protection, strength, journeying, mothering, hunting and gathering. Bear‚ hibernation reminds us of the value of going within.
