James Panteah: Jasper, Frog

James Panteah: Jasper, Frog

Panteah

Jasper—a stone known for its earthy tones and natural patterns. The surface of the jasper is a deep red, mossy green, or warm brown, mottled with subtle veins and swirls, giving the frog a grounded, elemental presence. Its body is smooth yet solid, rounded in form, with its limbs tucked closely beneath it in a classic resting pose. The eyes are inlaid with turquoise, their bright, luminous blue providing a vivid contrast against the earthy jasper. The eyes give the frog a lifelike quality—vivid, alert, and almost wise, as though it’s watching quietly from the edge of a stream or a sacred spring. Scattered across the frog’s back are small, precisely inlaid turquoise dots, each one gleaming softly.

Frog (Da:k'yawiyo): Toad (Dakka) Frog (Dakkya) is a sign of water. Water is life. In Zuni Pueblo, frogs often appear on prayer bowls since many of the Zuni prayers and dances ask for water in the form of rain or snow. Cleansing is also a part of Frog’s meaning as well as emotional and physical healing.
