Juana Homer: Serpentine, Bear
Juana Homer: Serpentine, Bear
Ho-mer
A bear carved from rich green serpentine stands strong and steady, its smooth, polished surface showing subtle shifts of color from deep forest to soft olive, with delicate mineral veining running through its form. The stone’s natural luster gives the bear a quiet, earthy vitality, as if it draws strength from the heart of the land. Set into its face are striking turquoise eyes, their vivid blue hue alive against the darker stone, lending the animal a watchful, spirited presence.
Bear (Anshe): Bear was the principal animal for the Pueblo People and they are the most prevalent subject of Zuni fetishes. Bear fetishes are used for healing, protection, strength, journeying, mothering, hunting and gathering. Bear‚ hibernation reminds us of the value of going within.
