Maxx Laate: Antler, Bear with cub

Maxx Laate: Antler, Bear with cub

La-ah-tee

The antler itself, with its creamy, bone-like texture and gentle variations in tone—from soft ivory to light tan—provides a natural, organic medium. The surface bears fine striations and grain patterns that enhance the lifelike quality of the carving, while also grounding the piece in its wilderness origins. The mother bear is depicted in a strong, slightly curved posture—her body sturdy and broad, radiating a sense of quiet power and gentle vigilance. The cub’s posture mirrors curiosity and trust, perhaps leaning into its mother or peeking out from her side. The contrast in size between the two figures emphasizes their relationship—a balance of strength and innocence, guidance and dependence. Both bears have black inlaid eyes, small but expressive. These dark eyes shine gently against the pale antler, giving each bear a spark of life. The mother’s gaze may seem watchful or serene, while the cub’s eyes suggest wonder or playfulness.

Bear (Anshe): Bear was the principal animal for the Pueblo People, and they are the most prevalent subject of Zuni fetishes. Bear fetishes are used for healing, protection, strength, journeying, mothering, hunting, and gathering. Bear‚ hibernation reminds us of the value of going within.
