The buffalo is a compact yet powerful figure, embodying the strength, endurance, and sacred presence of this revered animal. The walrus tooth, with its creamy, ivory-like surface, holds a warm, smooth texture and subtle grain—like a relic shaped by both nature and human hands. Its color, ranging from soft ivory to honeyed tones, gives the carving an ancient, timeless quality. The buffalo’s body is thick and muscular, carved with reverence to reflect the animal’s grounded power and resilience. The broad shoulders and sturdy legs are subtly defined, capturing the essence of a creature built for survival, for carrying burdens, and for sustaining life. Its humped back is gently curved, and its shaggy head is rendered with quiet dignity. Set into its face are turquoise eyes—vivid against the warm tone of the walrus tooth. These small but radiant inlays bring the buffalo to life, giving it an expression of calm watchfulness and deep spiritual awareness. The turquoise, a stone of healing and protection, symbolizes the buffalo’s sacred role as a bringer of abundance and a provider of all things necessary for life.

Buffalo/Bison (Si:wolo) is especially important to the Plains Indians. These magnificent animals were the basis of their lifeway before they were hunted to extinction by the white man. While not a traditional fetish subject for the Zunis, all animals have meaning and Bison reminds us of abundance and prayer.
