Nelson Yatsattie: Picasso Marble, Mole
Nelson Yatsattie: Picasso Marble, Mole
Y-at-sat-tie
Carved in a crouched, low posture, the mole appears nestled close to the ground, its paws slightly splayed forward in a digging pose. Its overall form is simple yet purposeful, shaped more by touch than sight—true to the mole’s nature. The turquoise eyes are small but vivid—two bright spots set against the muted, earthy body. Their color is arresting: a flash of brilliant sky blue, standing out like a secret gem in the soil.
Mole (K'yaluts'i): Mole’s behavior suggests that we trust what we feel, not what we see as the mole lives this way all the time. For the Zuni people, Mole (K'yaluts'i) is the guardian of Mother Earth.
