Pete Gasper Jr.: Marble, Bear
Gas-per
The polished surface enhances the stone’s organic patterns, giving the bear a grounded yet refined presence. Its turquoise eyes stand out vividly against the brown marble, bringing life and alertness to the bear’s expression while symbolizing protection and clarity. Resting on its back is a mother-of-pearl arrowhead, its iridescent sheen catching the light with subtle flashes of white. The arrowhead adds both symbolic meaning — representing strength, guidance, and protection — and a visual contrast that elevates the piece.
Bear (Anshe): Bear was the principal animal for the Pueblo People and they are the most prevalent subject of Zuni fetishes. Bear fetishes are used for healing, protection, strength, journeying, mothering, hunting and gathering. Bear‚ hibernation reminds us of the value of going within.
