The marble’s natural patterns—swirls and streaks of brown, gray, and black—flow across the bear’s form like the textured layers of fur, giving depth and dynamic movement to the stone. Set into its face are vivid turquoise eyes, their bright blue hue striking against the earthy tones of the marble, lending the carving a watchful and spirited expression. 

Bear: (Anshe) was the principal name for the pueblo people and they are the most prevalent subject of Zuni fetishes. Bear fetishes are used for healing, protection, strength, journeying, mothering, hunting and gathering. Bears hibernation reminds us of the value of going within.
