Reynold Lunasee: Black Marble, Sitting Panda Bear
Luna-see
The stone's density gives the panda a grounded, calming presence. Seated in a relaxed, iconic pose, the panda bear's form is rounded and peaceful, with curved limbs tucked close and a slightly tilted head that suggests curiosity or quiet observation. Though carved entirely from black marble, the artist has skillfully used fine etching to bring out the signature white markings of the panda. These etched areas are carefully textured or gently abraded, exposing the stone’s lighter underlayers or creating contrast through subtle surface variation. Set into its face are turquoise eyes, glowing against the black stone with vivid blue intensity. The turquoise adds a spark of life and spirit to the panda’s gentle gaze, infusing the piece with a sacred energy. The eyes draw immediate attention, suggesting peace, playfulness, and a deep, watchful awareness.
Bear (Anshe): Bear was the principal animal for the Pueblo People and they are the most prevalent subject of Zuni fetishes. Bear fetishes are used for healing, protection, strength, journeying, mothering, hunting and gathering. Bear‚ hibernation reminds us of the value of going within.
