Stephen Poncho: Pipestone, Beaver
Stephen Poncho: Pipestone, Beaver
Pon-cho
The body, shaped from warm reddish-brown pipestone, has a smooth, matte finish, giving the carving an earthy, grounded feel. The form is compact and strong, with gentle contours that suggest the beaver's industrious nature and connection to water and land. Its two front teeth, inlaid with lustrous mother-of-pearl, shimmer subtly—catching light with iridescent whites, and hints of gold. These teeth stand out brightly against the muted pipestone, symbolizing the beaver’s role as a builder and transformer. The eyes, set with small pieces of turquoise, are vivid and watchful. The turquoise adds a vibrant contrast—a splash of blue-green that suggests wisdom, life, and protection.
Beavers (Biha) are extremely energetic and exhibit great diligence in whatever they do. Their willingness to participate in purposeful and cooperative activity is part of their medicine. We can learn a great deal from this singular quality. Whether building their underwater lodges, repairing dams, or taking care of their kits, beavers do it with zeal. This is why we have the expression, “eager beaver.” They are gentle creatures who show us that working hard can be its own reward.
