Terrance Panteah: Marble, Bear
Terrance Panteah: Marble, Bear
Pan-tee-ah
Terrance has shaped the bear in a calm, seated position, its rounded form emphasizing stability and presence. The white marble, veined with soft gray and purple tones, gives the carving a gentle, natural beauty—suggesting clouds drifting across a pale sky or light moving over stone. The bear’s black eyes add contrast and depth, giving it a grounded and thoughtful expression. They draw attention to the face, where quiet wisdom and endurance seem to reside. In Zuni tradition, the bear is a protector and healer, a guardian of strength, courage, and introspection. The white marble symbolizes purity and spiritual clarity, while the subtle purple hues may evoke intuition and connection to higher realms.
Bear (Anshe): Bear was the principal animal for the Pueblo People and they are the most prevalent subject of Zuni fetishes. Bear fetishes are used for healing, protection, strength, journeying, mothering, hunting and gathering. Bear‚ hibernation reminds us of the value of going within.
