Todd Etsate: Amber, Buffalo

Todd Etsate: Amber, Buffalo

E-tsa-te

The buffalo is a powerful and radiant figure, embodying strength, endurance, and sacred connection to the earth. The amber—a rich blend of honeyed gold and deep molasses tones—captures light with a soft, inner glow. Swirls and inclusions within the polished surface give it the appearance of ancient energy frozen in time, like sunlight made solid. The smooth contours of the carving suggest the massive, grounded presence of the buffalo, while subtle details—muscle lines, textured hump, and low-slung head—give it realism and reverence. Its eyes are inlaid with turquoise, vivid and full of life. The bright blue stone stands out against the warm amber, imbuing the buffalo with spirit and intelligence. The gaze is steady, calm, and watching—like a guardian of the plains or a memory of the old ways. From its head rise coral horns, striking and symbolic. The coral's deep, earthy red contrasts beautifully with the amber body and turquoise eyes, adding a fiery presence—suggestive of vitality, protection, and ceremonial power. The horns are smooth, tapering, and gently curved, emphasizing the creature’s quiet strength and sacred status.

Bison (Si:wolo) is especially important to the Plains Indians. These magnificent animals were the basis of their lifeway before they were hunted to extinction by the white man. While not a traditional fetish subject for the Zunis, all animals have meaning and Bison reminds us of abundance and prayer.
