Todd Westika: Ice Italian Alabaster, Bison

Todd Westika: Ice Italian Alabaster, Bison

Wes-ti-ka

The alabaster itself is creamy and translucent, with delicate veining that flows through the stone like ancient currents of wind across the plains. Its surface is finely polished, giving the bison a soft, glowing finish—almost as if lit from within. The form is solid and muscular, capturing the powerful humped shoulders, broad head, and sturdy legs that define the bison’s iconic silhouette. Every curve and plane feels deliberate, evoking both motion and stillness—like a guardian of the earth frozen in mid-step. Its horns are made from mother-of-pearl, gracefully curved and shimmering with iridescence. These luminous accents catch the light in subtle waves of silver, and cream, giving the bison a sacred, almost celestial quality. Set into the heavy head are turquoise eyes—small but vivid. Their blue color contrasts sharply with the warm alabaster and glows with a quiet intensity, adding a watchful, wise expression. The eyes seem to hold memory and spirit, linking the bison to sky and stone alike.

Buffalo (Si:wolo) is especially important to the Plains Indians. These magnificent animals were the basis of their lifeway before they were hunted to extinction by the white man. While not a traditional fetish subject for the Zunis, all animals have meaning and Bison reminds us of abundance and prayer.
