Unknown Artist: Picasso, Bear with Arrowhead

Unknown Artist: Picasso, Bear with Arrowhead

The bear stands in a solid, confident posture, body low and broad, head slightly down as if walking with quiet purpose. Its form is stylized—smooth and strong—emphasizing the bear’s role as a protector and symbol of endurance rather than focusing on fine detail. Set into its face are turquoise eyes, bright and arresting against the cool greys of the stone. The turquoise inlay gives the bear a vivid, watchful presence—eyes full of spirit and awareness, connecting it to the sacred skies and the intuitive world. These eyes seem to imbue the figure with life, imbuing it with wisdom, healing, and protective energy. Resting on the bear’s back is a small arrowhead.

Bear (Anshe): Bear was the principal animal for the Pueblo People and they are the most prevalent subject of Zuni fetishes. Bear fetishes are used for healing, protection, strength, journeying, mothering, hunting and gathering. Bear‚ hibernation reminds us of the value of going within.
