Vern Neito (d): Augite, Double Turtles

Vern Neito (d): Augite, Double Turtles

Knee-toe

Two turtles carved from rich green augite appear to be swimming apart, their bodies turned in opposite directions as if gliding through quiet waters. The deep green stone, with its subtle flecks and variations, gives each turtle a natural, almost lifelike texture, while the smooth polish enhances its earthy elegance. Set into each face are vivid turquoise eyes, their bright blue glow adding a spark of liveliness and contrast against the darker tones of the augite. The positioning of the pair—moving away from one another—creates a sense of motion and balance, evoking the graceful independence of creatures navigating their own paths in the same vast waters.

Turtle (Edo:wa): Turtle has always been esteemed because it carries its home on its back and goes with the flow of the river, not against it. In some mythologies, the first North Americans envisioned the continent as a turtle because it was surrounded by water. Turtle reminds us to respect Mother Earth.
