Wilford Cachini: Antler, Maiden

Wilford Cachini: Antler, Maiden

Ka-cha-knee

A maiden carved from antler stands tall and graceful, her smooth, flowing form capturing both elegance and quiet strength. The creamy tones of the antler are accented by delicate natural textures, while vivid turquoise eyes bring a sense of life and spirit to her serene face. Cradled securely on her back is a smaller baby maiden, carved with gentle detail to mirror the protective bond between them. The figure is mounted on a polished wooden base, its rich grain and earthy tone grounding the piece in warmth and balance. The combination of antler, turquoise, and wood gives the carving a harmonious blend of maternal tenderness, cultural symbolism, and natural beauty.

Maiden (kyatsik'i): All types of maidens are part of this collection: Corn Maiden, Grandmother Maiden, Butterfly Maiden, Maiden of Blue Corn, Maiden, etc.

Corn Maiden (A:dow e:washdok'i): In the Zuni Pueblo the three stages of woman are recognized as:

  • Maiden, symbolizing potential
  • Mother, the life giver
  • Grandmother, the wise elder

Usually the maiden fetish will be emerging from corn (the corn maiden) or she will have whorls of hair on the side of her head, signifying that she has not had a child. The mother fetish also can be emerging from the corn (the corn mother) and she will have children with her or look pregnant. The grandmother usually has a shawl over her head and no corn represented on her body.
