Wilford Cachini: Picasso Marble, Bear
Wilford Cachini: Picasso Marble, Bear
Kah-chi-knee
The marble’s natural patterns—swirls and streaks of brown, gray—flow across the bear’s body, mimicking the texture and depth of fur, giving the carving a dynamic, naturalistic appearance. Set into its face are vivid turquoise eyes, their bright blue hue contrasting beautifully with the earthy tones of the stone, lending the bear a watchful, spirited presence. Resting along its back is a small turquoise arrowhead, its rich color harmonizing with the eyes while symbolizing protection, strength, and sacred tradition. The combination of Picasso marble’s intricate patterns and the vibrant turquoise elements creates a piece that is both visually striking and imbued with symbolic meaning.
Bear (Anshe): Bear was the principal animal for the Pueblo People and they are the most prevalent subject of Zuni fetishes. Bear fetishes are used for healing, protection, strength, journeying, mothering, hunting and gathering. Bear‚ hibernation reminds us of the value of going within.
