Wilford Cachini: Redwood, Bear

Wilford Cachini: Redwood, Bear

Kah-chi-knee

A bear carved from rich redwood stands with a strong, grounded presence, its smooth, polished form capturing the rounded muscles and solid bulk of the animal. The wood’s deep reddish-brown tones glow warmly, enhanced by subtle natural grain patterns that add texture and life to the carving. Set into the face are bright turquoise eyes, their vivid blue hue providing a striking contrast against the warm wood and lending the bear a watchful, spirited expression. Resting along its back is a finely shaped mother-of-pearl arrowhead, its iridescent surface shimmering with soft flashes of white symbolizing protection and guidance. The combination of redwood’s earthy warmth, the luminous turquoise eyes, and the glowing mother-of-pearl arrowhead gives the piece a harmonious balance of strength, beauty, and sacred meaning.

Bear (Anshe): Bear was the principal animal for the Pueblo People and they are the most prevalent subject of Zuni fetishes. Bear fetishes are used for healing, protection, strength, journeying, mothering, hunting and gathering. Bear‚ hibernation reminds us of the value of going within.
